 ABUSE : /abuse [nick]

The /abuse command records abuse in a way that cannot be modified to unfairly frame others but can be used to proove cases of abuse. Previously, people would send committee copies of pages to demonstrate abuse, but these can be easily altered. The abuse command makes a file record directly from the server and cannot be modified.

You can record cases of abuse by Operators. The report will contain the real nick of the person, any text in the page matching either your nickname and the abuser's nickname. All messages in your private message buffer and any messages in abuser's message buffer coming from you are also added to the file.

There is very little point in recording abuse by non-ops. Warn users who are abusing or harrassing other chatters and if all else fails use the /kick or /ban commands. In very serious cases of repeated harassment, we can take more permanent action by permbanning an IP range.

 BACKUP : /backup

Operators can use the /backup command to request help from other Operators online when a room gets too out of hand or being harrassed by regular users for fair actions. See also the /callcom command.

Backup sends a message to all other Operators on the chat that help is needed in the current room. Backup is a good command to use when an Operator is trying to stand up for chat policies and is overwhelmed by a group of users at a given location. This command should only be used in cases where the Operator or Operators at the location cannot handle the situation by themselves. In cases where an Operator is accused of misuse of powers or has a conflict with other Operators it is probably a good idea to /summon a few other Operators to the location to get second and third opinions and come up with a group solution. Operator conflicts or disagreements on policy should be addressed by private message or in a locked location as public accusations generally aggravate the situation.

 BAN : /ban [nick] [reason]

Ban is used to prevent users who refuse to follow chat policy or are harassing other users from logging into the chat.

There are several forms of the /ban command.
  1. /ban [nick] [reason] - The server finds the nick and bans the user.
  2. /ban [ip_address] [reason] - Bans the ip_address, the best way is to ban only the first 3 sets of numbers in the IP address. For example an ip 10.11.12.13 would best be banned with /ban 10.11.12.
  3. /ban [nick] -a [reason] - Looks up the [nick] bans by IP address as the above example.
  4. /ban [nick] -p [reason] - Ban the user and enable /noproxy at the same time.

The server uses only the first three fields of the IP address when placing a nick ban since users from a particular address may have many individual machines at their disposal or have a dynamically assigned address. So if a user with IP address "1.2.3.4" is banned, the server would ban any addresses matching "1.2.3" in the first part of the address.

The second form of the command is used in case a user is rapidly changing their nickname to avoid banning, in which case you can just ban the address directly with "/ban [address]". In the above example, a good ban would be "/ban 1.2.3". There are more possibilities with address bans such as "/ban 1.2" and "/ban 1.2.3.4" which would result in less specific and more specific bans respectively. Realize that banning address "1.2.3.4" will probably result in the user switching to the terminal sitting right next to them with a slightly different address.

Banning should only be used as a last resort. Please refer to the Chat Rules and Kick and Ban Rules for valid kick and ban reasons.

 CALLCOMM : /callcom [message]

Operators can use the /callcomm [message] to send a message to all committee who are online. This is useful to get thier attention in case of problems with other Ops or to assist in clairfying rules.

 CLEAR : /clear [text]

Clears all lines containing [text] from the current room. This command should be used to remove excessive vulgarity, insults, or harrassment from the chat. It is useful at times to clear inflamatory statements while trying to calm down both parties in an arguement.

Another form /clear - can be used to clear all text from the room. Ops who have locked a private room can use /clear - and Committee can use /clear - to clear excessive flood from a room.

 COLOR: /color [color]

The single slash form of the color command can be used by Operators anytime. This causes the Ops font to be displayed in the [color] specified. When you set your color an example is dispalyed as *** Font color set to blue and this will show up in the color so you can test you new color before typing in the main.

When using the HEX codes for colors, remember that only 0-9 and a-f are recognized hexadecimal digits, and that 00 is lowest intensity and ff is highest. See the Color Reference for a list of hexadecimal values.

 COM : /com [message]

Operators can type /com [message] to send a message ( suggestion complaint or problem ) to the server committee. The committee will then read this message later and try to assist you with your problem.

Operators can use the abuse command to document an un-alterable copy of the current chat page into the server. An /abuse report against a specific person can also be made which will include a copy of your messages and the accused private messages to determine if either person was involved in instigating the abuse seen in the main. You will then get a link to post this report to the Committee message board with the /com command.

This can later be reviewed by committee to determine if action is needed against potentially abusive Operators. Committee are under strict instructions not to release any information in the abuse log to others and this is the only case were a persons private messages are recorded anywhere. Abuse logs can only be read by trusted committee members and are flushed after 30 days.

Regular users are encouraged to seek assistance from Operators first then the server Committee on the same server which the problem occured and if all else fails can use the Contact Page. We do read these contact reports and if there is enough evidence of repeated abuse by a user we will investigate and take action.

While we would like to look at everyone's problem we have to control the number of complaints so this command is only available to Ops. Ideally the Singapore office will only deal with , account problems, upgrade requests, bug reports, and complaints about the committees members. The Singapore office does not get involved with Committee decisions but instead delegates this to associate offices who are better informed with the specific issues on each server.

 EFF : /eff

Displays the current statistics for the server. Stats include the maximum number of users, the current number of users, the percentage of operators, the minimum Op percentage for free color and the current color mode.

 FORWARD : /forward [nick]

Users who are being harrassed may want help from an Operator and should send proof of the harrassment using the /forward message. If a person insults or uses extreme vulgarity the Operator should warn the abuser in private and if they do not stop you can kick or ban them with an appropriate reason.

 GIVE & GRANT : /give [nick]

The /give command allows Operators to give use of /color to one other regular user on the chat for trial purposes.

The /grant command allows Operators to give use of /color /pic /http /img and icons to one other regular user on the chat for trial purposes.

An Operator can /give OR /grant one other person at a time but can not use both /give and /grant.

Alamak reserves the right to alter or remove these two commands at any time.

 HTTP LINK : /[URL]

This use to be a /http command but has since been changed so that you can type /http://someplace.com/page.html and it will be replaced with a link to the web page and the address in the middle of your sentance.

Example "Check out my homepage at http://www.alamak.com and tell me what you think?" would be replace with "Check out my homepage at http://www.alamak.com and tell me what you think?".

 ICONS : // and /[icon]

The // command on its own will display a list of all icon images that are on the server. Type a slash followed by the icon name or just click on a link in the list displayed by //. In the middle of your sentence you can type for example "My /dog is so cute" and /dog will be replaced with the dog icon.

If you have a new icon that you'd like added to our server just find one of our committee members and ask them to install it for you. Use /whois ## to find committee members and /send [committee_nickname] to send it.

 ID : /id [nick]

Operators can use /id to get information about thier level and login host etc. As you increase in level your abilty to /id other users and Ops gets better so that you can get more information to determine if a user is the same as another user for abuse tracking purposes. Beginning Ops can only /id themself.

 INVITE : /invite [nick]

This allows an Operator to create a protected room which is saved in the server. The operator who first types this in a private room is the list maintainer. Anyone who is added can add or remove other Ops from the invite list except that the room maintainer can not be removed.

No Operators can /join or /summon /kick or /ban other users into an /invite room except those on the invite list. If the room is locked only Ops on the invite list can join the room without being summoned and regular users can not join in freely. If the room is unlocked regular users can enter the room freely but no Ops can enter who are not on the invite list. Regular users can not be kicked out of an /invite room from the outside except by committee and above.

Do not make un-necessary invite commands, these are permanently stored in the server. Setup your room, remember it and use the same room name again next time, Thanks!

 LINE BOLD : //bo [line]

Bold will cause the whole [line] to be printed in bold text. The /bo /bl /it commands will work in combination with this command but /pic does not.

 LINE BLINK : //bl [line]

Blink will cause the whole [line] to be printed in blinking text. The /bo /bl /it commands will work in combination with this command but /pic does not.

 LINE COLOR: //[color] [text]

Color causes the rest of the line specified with [text] to be displayed as bold and in the color specified. Notice that these command use double forward slash "//" at the beginning of the line. Colors are specified either as standard 1 character abbreviations ( r , g , b , c , p , y , m , w ) or hexadecimal RRGGBB format. See the Color Reference for a list of hexadecimal values.

When using the HEX codes for colors, remember that only 0-9 and a-f are recognized hexadecimal digits, and that 00 is lowest intensity and ff is highest.

If this text is not displayed in RED then your browser cannot display colors, although you can still use the commands to color your text for other users.

 LINE FADE : //fade [color1] [color2] ... [colorN] [text]

The //fade command writes up to 80 characters of [text] starting in [color1] and evenly fading the text to [color2] to [colorN]. You must specify at least 2 colors but not more than 9 colors. The number of colors is automatically detected based on how many hex sets are used as a prefix to the actual text.

Example : //fade FF0000 FF6600 FFFF00 66FF00 00FF00 00FF66 0066FF 0000FF This is a test of the fade command with 8 different colors specified in the fade.

 LINE ITALIC : //it [line]

Italic will cause the whole [line] to be printed in italic text. The /bo /bl /it commands will work in combination with this command but /pic does not.

 JOIN : /join [new_room_name]

Operators have the special ability to create new rooms and to lock or unlock those rooms. Just type "/join [new_room_name]" and the new room is created for you and locked. You may then use /summon to bring your friends into the room.

 KICK : /kick [nick] [reason]

The /kick is used to kick a user off the chat for minor violations of chat policy. The user will be kicked off the chat for 10 minutes, after which they will be able to login again.

A warning is required for /kick and kicks should only be done for violation in chat policy not to settle personal disagreements.

Higher level Ops have access to additional forms of the kick command.
  1. /mkick [nick] [reason] - kicks multiple logins. Multiple logins are not sufficient reason to warrant a kick unless these multiple logins are intentionally flooding or disrupting the chat. Please be aware that a /mkick may inadvertantly kick out innocent users on a similar network connection.
  2. /akick [nick] [reason] - similar to above but kicks all users with a similar address, same conditions apply.
  3. /nkick [match] [reason] - similar again but kicks nicks where the beginning matches [match]. Same conditions apply but this is primarily used to get rid of flood robots and should probably be used with /norobot.

Please refer to the Chat Rules and Kick and Ban Rules for valid kick and ban reasons.

 LOCK : /lock

The /lock command locks the current location so that other users cannot enter unless they are summoned. When a new location is created by an Operator, it is automatically locked. It can be unlocked with the /unlock command and re-locked with the /lock command.

Once a location is locked, it is labeled as locked along with the Operator's nickname and address, and can only be re-entered by the Operator who locked it. Users can be /summoned to a locked location, and if another Operator /locks the location again, the new lock replaces the old so that only the last person who locked it can re-enter after leaving.

 LOGGING : /log

Toggle logging of /kicks and /bans to your message buffer.

CHAT MAIL : /mail [nick] [message]

The CHAT MAIL function allows Ops to send each other messages when they are not currently in the chat. When you login to the chat you will be notified if you have new CMAIL and provided a link to read it. You can also access CMAIL from inside of the FreeHome server which allows you to delete specific CMAILS, add people to your AddressBook or Wait List.

 MAILSET : /mailset

This command allows you to control who can send you chat mail either via the chat or via freehome. You can set your mailset rules to accept or deny ops and regular users. You can also specificically block cmail from individual Ops.

Mailset syntax is rather confusing so just type /mailset in the chat and clickable options will be displayed. You can even flush all your rules and reset to the default, probably the best course of action. Then as you need you deny certain users by clicking deny in the cmail links.

 MUTE : /mute [nick] [reason]

Mute prevents a user from typing on the main. Sometimes a user gets abit out of hand but not quite to the extent where a /kick is necessary. In this case you can try muting the user then chat with them via private message to get them to calm down or comply with the rules. In many cases a mute works much better than a /kick or /ban and generally doesn't make the user quite as angry. Remember this is a friendly chat so softer measures are sometimes more effective and looked on more positively by the committee.

Use /mute - [nick] to remove a mute.

 NOROBOT : /norobot

Once in awhile hackers or other chat adminstrators use robot programs to login to the chat and flood, advertise thier own chat, or otherwise harrass users. Why anyone would want to join a chat that uses these strategies is beyond me but we do have a way to block these programs.

When /norobot is enabled regular users must enter a password provided on the login page in the form of an image, this image password is difficult for robot programs to read. Most users don't understand what is going on when the blocker is enabled so it is left off by default but when necessary use /norobot. The robot blocker will be automatically disabled after 1 hour and if the robot persists you will have to use /norobot again after an hour.

Use /norobot - [nick] to remove.

 OPS : /ops

Use /ops to hide your Ops "WINGS". Ergo it will remove the "##" marks on the Ops IP address so the Operator can chat as a regular chatter and not be bothered for /grant or /give. This is a stealth mode for Operators.

 PICTURE : /pic [URL]

This puts a link on your nickname so that when ever you type something in the main it appears as a link. You can link to a webpage or picture of yourself. One use of this command is to first upload a picture with the /send command then link it with /pic. Send the picture to yourself, click on the link, and copy the address to use with the pic command, something like /pic http://woah.alamak.com/upload/me.jpg.

 POST : /post [text]

Post is used to put a message on the Operators' message board. When the message board is full the oldest message drops off the board and the new one added at the top. The message board holds somewhere between 50 and 100 messages depending on how the server is setup. The message board can only be read by Operators.

The message board is to be used for posting information of general interest to all Operators. It is a good place to announce Operator meetings and chat parties. It is not a complaint forum, a voting booth, a place to discuss server changes or to send suggestions to Alamak.

 PREFERENCES : /pref

Operators have the added benefit that preferences are saved from session to session. The chat server will automatically save your preferences when you logout with /quit but you can use /pref to manually save your preferences.

The /pref command saves things like refresh /speed /auto /intro /pic /nick /comment and /ops setting. Operators don't have to retype thier auto-reply and other perferences everytime they login to the chat. Operators can also login as per usual but appear to login under another nick because its silently changed to the nick last used nick in the server.

 READ : /read

Read is used by Operators to view the Operators' message board. Messages are listed most recent first and include the Operator's official nickname and the time of posting Pacific Standard Time.

 ROSE : //rose[1-9] [text] /rose[6,7,12] [HEX]

The rose command draws different kinds of roses in color around the [text]. You can use '//rose1 hi' or '//rose2 hi' etc or you can specify your own color of roses his hex code '//rose6 FFFFFF' would make white roses '//rose7 FFFF00' would make another kind of rose but in yellow and '//rose12 CC0000' would make 12 red roses.

 SUMMON : /summon [nick]

The /summon command transports the user with the nickname [nick] to the current room. Summon is the only way to get a user into a locked location without unlocking it first. The user receives a private message telling them who has summoned them. Summon is delayed until the person being summoned refreshes the screen. If the person leaves before refreshing it will fail.

If a summon seems to have failed with no message indicating it is blocked, try using /whois to see how long they have been idle. Operators must use their regular Operator nickname when using /summon.

Summons can also be prevented by using the /null or /reflect command. Null simply blocks the summons while /reflect does the reverse of a summon and summons the summoner to the targets room with a rather humorous departure and arrival message, usually something about going up in a poof of smoke or trailing black smoke etc.

 UNBAN : /unban [address]

There are three forms of unban.
  1. /unban - lists all bans
  2. /unban [IP] - unban an IP address
  3. /unban [nick] - removes all bans matching [nick]

Unban is used to remove or list banned addresses. A list of banned addresses will be displayed if the [address] option is left blank. If an [address] is supplied and it exactly matches an address in the ban list, the ban will be removed from the list. As an example "/unban 1.2.3" would remove a ban on address "1.2.3" followed by anything. All bans are deleted when the server is rebooted or reset by one of the system operators. Addresses should be unbanned after a sufficient time has elapsed.

 UNINVITE : /uninvite [nick]

This removes an Operator from the invite list for the current room. Anyone on the list can add or remove Ops. The room maintainer can not be removed unless he removes himself, ergo destroy the invite list for the room.

 UNLOCK : /unlock

Unlock will remove a /lock that has been placed on a non-public room. If an Operator creates a new location, it is locked by default and the Op must use /unlock to allow other users, including other Operators, to enter the room without summoning. You can /summon users to a locked room.

 WAIT : /wait [nick]

The /wait command will display your current WAIT list and allow you to be notified when your friends log into the chat. There is also a seperate WAIT WINDOW you can click which will show all users on your wait list in the same cluster of servers. This list automatically refreshes every 60 seconds.

 WARN : /warn [nick] [reason]

You can warn users if you intend to kick or ban them but this is normally handled automatically by the server so that if you try to /kick a warning will be issued. The second attempt to /kick will result in an actual kick.

 WORD MODIFICATION : /[HEX][word], /bo[word], /bl[word], and /it[word]

The commands /bo, /bl, and /it cause the next word to be printed in HEX color bold, blinking, or italic text. These commands will only work in lines that start with two forwards slashes and have no space between the commands and the words they modify. These commands can be used in combination with line modification or other word modifications to get two or more types of text modification. For example "... /bo/itHello" would print "... Hello!!!". Remember that at the beginning of the line, a line modification has a space after the /HEX, /bo, /bl, or /it option but word modifiers do not.

 OPS SIGNUP

Ops can signup by Credit Card ( VISA OR MASTERCARD ) via the Operator Application (Credit Card) and the account is activated within a few minutes on all servers or send Check or Money Order to one of our offices. To become an Operator, join up on the Operator Application (Cheque Mail Bank Transfer) page.
